Welcome to Salty Popcorn - my site dedicated to expressing my opinion on films. Most of the reviews I read in the paper make me angry that they are either all so negative or I completely disagree with them. So now it's my turn. I hope you enjoy it and if you do sign up for updates on the left hand side. Thanks for stopping in!! PLEASE NOTE: My scoring of films is now based on an "Out of 10" score. The Lovely Bones (2009)

By weird accident I had in my bookshelf a copy of The Lovely Bones written by Alice Sebold in 2002. I kept putting it off as it looked like a "total" chick book and not something I would normally read. I really like my fantasy (Tad Williams and RA Salvatore RULE) but eventually had nothing to read. I picked it up and thought it was time to give it a look.

What a massive surprise I received when I discovered the magic of this novel and how powerful a story it actually was. This book totally blew my mind. It is the story of a teenage girl who, after being brutally raped and murdered, watches from heaven as her family and friends go on with their lives, while she herself comes to terms with her own death. The novel received a great deal of critical praise and became an instant bestseller. The novel's title stems from a line towards the end of the novel, in which Susie ponders her friends' and family's newfound strength after her death:

These were the lovely bones that had grown around my absence: the connections — sometimes tenuous, sometimes made at great cost, but often magnificent — that happened after I was gone. And I began to see things in a way that let me hold the world without me in it. The events my death brought were merely the bones of a body that would become whole at some unpredictable time in the future. The price of what I came to see as this miraculous lifeless body had been my life.

Obviously I was not the only one to fall in love with this story, awards world wide and a director who also fell in love with it decided to purchase the rights to the book out of his own pocket. Enter fantasy director GOD for bringing us the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy.....Peter Jackson.

Peter Jackson has been filming since 2007 in New Zealand and is bringing this film magically to life with an astounding cast.

Susie Salmon will be played by Saoirse Ronan who you may remember starring in Atonement as the young girl. I have not seen much of her work and to me she looks like a sad person - I hope she can pull off the complete positive bubbly attitude of Susie.

Rachel Weisz as Abigail Salmon, Susie's mother. Perfect casting here and I am confident she can nail the role of the depressed housewive who misses her past of freedom.

Mark Wahlberg (ok I had to use this picture - always been one of my faves of him ) as Jack Salmon, Susie's father. I hope he can pull this off, he replaced Ryan Gosling after Gosling quit the film. Please oh please do not give us what Morgan described as a comedy performance from The Happening!

Stanley Tucci as George Harvey, Susie's killer. Or what I like to describe as that evil ^%$#. I am confident he can make this role chilling. Everything he does is gold.

Susan Sarandon as Lynn, Susie's grandmother and Abigail's mother. Casting brilliance. She can do anything this lady. And to play the over the top, alcoholic funny lady who attempts to bind the family back together should be a walk in the park for Sarandon and a joy to watch for the rest of us.

The film is due for release in the middle of 2009 and I absolutely can't wait. As soon as there are trailers, posters or more info you will find it here. Thankyou Alice Sebold and Peter Jackson for bringing this alive.

Thanks for the positive recommendation Jason - by weird coincidence this book is sitting on my desk waiting to be read right now. I'm just about to start on it myself! Look forward to seeing if it lives up to your wrap.

The Lovely Bones is one of my favorite books. Im actually reading 'Lucky' Sebolds memoir at the moment, so it was kind of a surprise to see this here.

As much as I love Peter Jackson, and I want the movie to be good, I don't think it is going to work.
The depiction of heaven in the book is so incredibly ambiguous, that everyone who reads it is going to have their own interpretation.

But then again Jackson took lord of the rings and made it better than what was in my minds eye. So gigantic fingers crossed.
The last thing I want is this perfect book to be destroyed. So pleaaaaassse nooo!!!!!

David, I don't know if I would call the heaven ambiguous - she describes what she sees. He can't get it too far from her descriptions and I don't think heaven would be much more different from Earth in this case just a bit more fluid. It will be Susie's depiction we will see not everyone in heaven. I think he can make it quite fantastical. I really have faith he will make it well worth the viewing but as is the case 95% of the time, if you have read the book you will always prefer it to the movie.

Thanks for popping in!!

I was excited the moment I heard The Lovely Bones would be made into a film by Peter Jackson.

It was sad to hear Ryan Gosling quit after creative differences with the crew and I hope his replacement in Mark Wahlberg can carry that role. It requires plenty of emotional sensitivities and I'm not sure if Wahlberg was the best choice.
I heard the producers/director wanted Gosling to lose his beard and lose the excess weight but he refused so he quit. Apparently, looking too old and too fat wasn't what they had in mind.

I like the idea of using New Zealand as the setting of Heaven for the film. The Land of the Long White Cloud did wonders for Peter Jackson's Lord of The Rings.

Cheers!

Linh - same here - I was stoked and considering I only just read the book, googled it and found out it was in the works I was also slightly shocked.
Agreed about Gosling, he has that crative genius about him that will make him difficult to work with. I just watched Lars and the Real Girl yesterday and thought he would have made a brilliant Jack Salmon. I have seen Wahlberg pull out some great acting so let's hope he can bring it to the table with this one. I also have to give some credit to Jackson after the cinematic brilliance he allowed us to witness in the past.
Completely agree about NZ - would move there in a second if I could afford it and find a job - imagine waking up to those mountains evrey day. Brilliant!
Thanks so much for visiting and commenting!!

I have and I know!! I even commented about it above. He has done some good work in the past and let's hope Jackson's head is more screwed on than M.Night S!!
