The Uninvited ($9-)
Based on Kim Jee-Woon's 2003 Korean horror film, “Changhwa, Hongryon,” “The Uninvited” revolves around Anna (Emily Browning), who returns home after spending time in the hospital following the tragic death of her mother.
Her recovery suffers a setback when she discovers her father (David Strathairn) has become engaged to her mother’s former nurse, Rachel (Elizabeth Banks). That night, Anna is visited by her mother's ghost, who warns her of Rachel's intentions.
Together, Anna and her sister (Arielle Kebbel) try to convince their father that his current fiancée is not who she pretends to be, and what should have been a happy family reunion becomes a lethal battle of wills between stepdaughters and stepmother.
The English speaking horror films are on the increase and from what I have been seeing getting better. First we had "My Bloody Valentine" - shit but fun in 3D, then "The Unborn" (just as shit), then we had "Friday the 13th" - shit but better production values. Now we get "The Uninvited" which is much much better. On an aside I mentioned them as English speaking horrors becaue "Let The Right One In" is probably my fave film of the year so far but dashed as it's not English so will keep it seperate from the new horror fad of the US.
I found this film more of a thriller with horror elements than an actual thriller. Think The Stepfather (from the 80's) crossed with The 6th Sense and sprinkled with The Ring - stir gradually while applying predictability and you get The Uninvited.
Directed by a British team who call themselves the Guard Brothers, The Uninvited has its splatter of shocks - with The Ring styled creepy floor walking on all fours set to become a standard horror scene in all films from the US from now on. But it also has some more subtly unsettling scenes where reality and hallucination merge and we are left to wonder which character is truly the nutcase. Is it sensitive, round-faced Anna, repulsed by sex and a little too protective of her mother's memory? Or is it Rachael, with her Stepford smile and her fierce determination to be liked?
Thanks to a pair of talented actresses, The Uninvited is enjoyable for almost an hour and a half. But the ending?? Why is it that horror films, even thrillers nowadays must throw in the big twist/ reveal to be clever. No film will ever match the twist reveal in The 6th Sense so stop it. I picked the ending after about 40min's of the film and preyed it would not be the case. Why be so cliched and convoluted? The Stepfather had no brilliant twist - he was just an evil mother f*&king psycho. I would have thoroughly enjoyed to have seen a plane story evolve around an absolutely messed up psycho.
It's been 5yrs since I have seen Australian Emily Browning onscreen and while brilliant in this and now a 21yr old with a sexy bod who will become popular with the boys, I much preferred her as the annoying gothic girl in Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. But she holds her own as the lead in this quite well. Arielle Kebbel is fine as the sluttier and partying-harder older sister Alex although she is no standout. David Strathairn looks completely lost in this one and you think he would much prefer to be elsewhere. Elizabeth Banks is my standout in this one, she is just going from film to film at the moment doing so many different roles. Porno star in Zack & Miri, Laura Bush in W and now psycho bitch in The Uninvited. Love her! This one scene in a white dress where she removes a roast from the oven and slams it down is awesome - I gave a little chuckle. I think she is capable of great stuff and I look forward to many more films with her in it.
COMPETITION: If you want a freebie to see this I have 2 FREE double passes to giveaway to the first two people to personal message me on Orble or to email me at jkdigitaldesigns@gmail.com I need your postal address and the answer to the following question. Which big comedian starred with Emily Browning in Lemony Snickets?
While not brilliant this film has made me want to see the original and it is much better than the standard horror crap being punched out the US cookie cutter at the moment. Worth $9-
