Rumors have it that auditions are under way for Tomorrow When the War Began film to commence shooting in September in Australia. This is MASSIVE NEWS!!! It is also news that hungry fans the world over have been waiting on for years and years.
Apparently casting is happening in Sydney and from what info can be gathered it appears Stuart Beattie is to direct. This is an odd choice for director as Beattie has never directed before however his list of writing credits is astounding. Beattie has written for all three Pirates movies, he has also written Bra Boys, screenplay for Australia and 30 Days of Night. His upcoming writing works include GI Joe and Halo. Nothing has been listed as yet linking him to Tomorrow except an article from last September stating he was onboard with Omnilab and they confirmed rumors they would be producing Tomorrow.
Anousha Zarkesh has been mentioned as casting director and with over 20yrs of passionate casting on Australian productions she is just what this movie needs. Without our right Ellie we will all be screwed......and hungry fans the world over just may start that war!
Michael Boughen, Andrew Prowse and Mike Selwyn will produce. Boughen is probably best known for his writing and producing of recent slasher flick Dying Breed. Prowse is best known for his direction work on Farscape, McLeod's Daughters and Rush - I like this - if he can capture that Aussie landscape like they have on McLeod's and then war it up he will be a great choice. Selwyn is hard to get info on - he is listed on IMDB only for receiving "Thanks" on "Dating the Enemy" in 1996 - this was the film with Guy Pierce and Claudia Karvan.
Book Info thanks to Wiki.
The Tomorrow Series is a series of invasion novels written by Australian writer John Marsden, detailing a high-intensity invasion and occupation of Australia by a foreign power. The novels are told in first person perspective by the main character, a teenage girl named Ellie Linton, who is part of a small band of teenagers waging a guerrilla war on the enemy soldiers in their fictional home town of Wirrawee. The name of the series is derived from the title of the first book, Tomorrow, When The War Began.
The series consists of seven books, published from 1994 to 1999 by Pan Macmillan and has been reprinted sixteen times. A follow up series entitled the "Ellie Chronicles" began publication in 2003 and was completed in 2006. It deals with the aftermath of the war and Ellie's attempts to regain a normal level of functioning in the face of the psychological damage sustained during the war.
The invading nation is never specified in the books; in fact, no nation in the world meets the criteria laid out in the series most likely by explicit intent of the author. Likewise, no parts of the war outside Ellie's immediate perspective are covered; the reader is not informed exactly how much of the country is under enemy control, or how well the war is going for the Australian military. This was likely Marsden's intention, given that the series focuses on the characters more than the actual war, and is an accurate reflection of how Ellie and her friends are isolated and cut off from outside communication.
Tomorrow, When The War Began and its subsequent sequels are one of the most popular and critically-acclaimed series of novels aimed at young readers in Australian literature history. It has sold between 2 and 3 million copies in Australia alone and has been translated into five languages, one of them being Swedish, where the series has sold over 115 000 copies.
Originally intended as children's books these books have a following as passionate as Harry Potter readers and include many thousands of adults. The book contains a passion and dedication to friends that really grip the heart strings. I think another reason they do so well is for the very fact that the enemy is never mentioned - how they will attempt to do this in a film will be interesting to see.
This film could skyrocket Australia and its landscape into more world positive attention if this is handled right - it could be an improvement on the film Australia and attract audiences that have never heard of this book series before. I can't wait!!

Funny you mention Pattinson in Potter - I watched it on Friday night on my brand new Blu Ray - love those films
Auditioning would be amazing - my nerves easily frazzle and I once passed out in a job interview (long story) but I couldn't put myself in this position - good on you for wanting to have a go - very cool.

Oh not so impressive I don't think. I reckon I'd be a bucket of nerves and absolutely RIDICULOUS! They'd take one look at me and tell me to leave. You have to know me to know what I can do.

If you were pretty smart you could probably work out I said who the casting agent was - I would probably start with a yellow pages search on her name........
