Welcome to Salty Popcorn - my site dedicated to expressing my opinion on films. Most of the reviews I read in the paper make me angry that they are either all so negative or I completely disagree with them. So now it's my turn. I hope you enjoy it and if you do sign up for updates on the left hand side. Thanks for stopping in!! PLEASE NOTE: My scoring of films is now based on an "Out of 10" score. : Yay Top 20!!
Category: No Category
After prompting from Lady Morgan I jumped on board and decided to write my Top 20 Films of the last 10yrs. I wanted mine to be somehow different so thought it best to allow every year to have a standout or two - so from the Year 2000 to 2009 I have chosen two films from each year to make up my list. And I damn well like it An awesome bunch of films I want to sit down and watch again.

I also must have a slight protest. The end of the decade is not until the end of this year

oh Into The Wild was very good, im liking Emile Hirsche the more i see him

im also a huge fan of Finding Neverland, i included it on my tear-jerker movie list a few months back

i havent seen Alpha Dog yet, but i am very curious of it now, actually theres a few you have listed that i havent seen, ill keep them in mind next time im browsing dvds

you know The Dark Knight was our only official overlap, but you have only selected one which i particularly disliked (Australia), i think we have fairly compatible taste

I just loved Alpha Dog - so under rated - and if you haven't seen any of the others on the list they are MUST SEEs.

I think you would especially like 12 and Holding, Brick, Elephant and City of God - all amazing pics!!!

Thanks for talking me into writing it Morgan - have a good one!

Nice list, Jason, and some unusual choices, which is good to see. Like Morgan, I probably would leave Australia well away from any personal 'best of' list, but plenty of these I agree with and you've also reminded me of some I desperately need to see. Great stuff.

Be interesting to see if anyone gives a crap about Avatar in five years time. I liked it but I don't think it's Top 10 material once you take out the special effects.

Hang on mate, if the decade doesn't finish til the end of this year, then the year 2000 doesn't count as the decade just gone, but in fact the previous decade, which means you can't include Gladiator or Requiem for a Dream or Gladiator, otherwise there's eleven years in the decade.

Don't mind me, just a spanner in the works ... I realise you don't supposedly turn the age you are until that year is entirely up ... ie if I was born December 1968, I'm not officially 40 until December 2009, but as for movie releases, surely we include the decade from when the beginning of the first year of the turnover til the last year before the next turnover ... if that makes any sense.

Decade ends with 2009... otherwise people would refer to the year 1990 as part of the 80s, etc, etc.

OK - thanks so much everyone for the comments.

Just to start with this comes from Wiki Answers:

Consider the first year of the decade to be 1. There is no 0 to start. So the full ten years would end in this decade for example on 31/12/10

Luke - it is funny you mention those exact years. I graduated from high school in 1990 and it was considered the last year of the 80's when I was there

And - you can't take the special effects out of Avatar - it is what makes the film. I am yet to watch it in 2D although my parents saw it this way first and still thought it was sensational.

Yay Rix - what a surprise response from you young padiwan. Have a safe trip. Luv ya

Thanks heaps Jesus!!! I totally loved Alpha Dog and I do believe I was the only person on the entire planet that loved Australia. I guess I just saw something different. I am also a HUGE Harry fan and I still think the first one was the most detailed and dedicated to the story But Elephant is still a work of art - just loved it. In fact - I might bust out the dvd and watch it again tonight.
PS: If you ever go to Baz's house again I think you may need an assistant

Bryn - I didn't post a Top 20 of the decade - only the top 20 of the last 10yrs Arrgghh - technicalities lol. Are u about to turn 40? - right behind you in 2yrs Already started planning my 40th - hahaha

Thanks heaps people - have an awesome day!!

I hate that technicality. So a decade is different from ten years?? So any movie that came out in 1980 is considered a 70s flick?? I hate this technicality. I refuse to comply.

I'm actually 41 ... well actually no. I'm 41 in December 'cos I was born Dec 68. Sheesh.

Hahahah - you're funny.

A decade is ten years yes - but when you talk in decades as is in - "this current decade" you would be referring to the 80's, 90's, naughties etc - the naughties don't end until Dec 31st

But stick to your guns - live and believe in what makes more sense to you

Hi jason,

Interesting list, some I really liked as you know. Some ranked alot higher than I would have expected.

The only film I hated was 'Australia", i really have nothing nice to say about it.

Alpha Dog had some moments but overall suffered from terrible acting and a story that tried way to hard...kind of like Chumscrubber, which i preferred but still though was over run by faults.

Elephant really deserved to be in my list, it is an exceptional work that really effected me.

I'm surprised that Philosopher's Stone made the cut, for me its the lamest of the Potter films, Prisoner of Azkaban is my fave by far.

I still haven't seen Avatar yet, but don't think it would make my list...hope I am wrong.

I will, Jason, I will. As far as I'm concerned movies from the 70s are from January 1970 until December 1979, and so on and so forth ... Period.

JD - shock horror. Get thee to Pandora stat!!!

To me Philosopher's stone was the most detailed and prior to it I knew nothing of Harry Potter. I watched the first movie and then read all the books. It introduced me to a world I fell in love with
