Welcome to Salty Popcorn - my site dedicated to expressing my opinion on films. Most of the reviews I read in the paper make me angry that they are either all so negative or I completely disagree with them. So now it's my turn. I hope you enjoy it and if you do sign up for updates on the left hand side. Thanks for stopping in!! PLEASE NOTE: My scoring of films is now based on an "Out of 10" score. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen ($14.25)

Reposting as out tomorrow and thought you may have missed it first time around

This is the first combined review from Sean and myself and after this post our top score will now be $17- thanks to the cinema owners of Australia now raising the price of an adult ticket.

Sean and I attended the Australian Premiere of Transformers 2 Tuesday night and I have to say the night was a huge success. They held it at the Bondi Junction Greater Union Cinema in two individual cinemas and thank god presented the film in DIGITAL as opposed the shakier 35mm we are used to watching movies on. Oddly, they held a pre party as opposed to an after party. The pre party was in The Eastern (Hotel) in the shopping centre and I have to say it is one of the most beautiful venues I have been to in a long time. All the staff were supermodels and I want to go there again so I can ogle the wait staff. There was one guy who I think worked there who was the spitting image of Adam Brody - love you haha. The film was introduced by the esoteric beauty of older Home and Away stardom who now has a great little part in this film, Isabel Lucas. She came across as totally drop dead gorgeous but slightly air headed and when announcing to the audience we should all strap on for the ride (as opposed to strap in) I lost it with uncontrollable laughter - thanks to the guys from www.cinefools.com sitting next to me - I love you Mike Selwyn hahaha.

I will start with Sean's thoughts on the film and then follow with my own thoughts and a conclusion.

Sean's Thoughts:

Worth $16.50

Probably now my favourite movie of all time. $16.50, easy. The action is non-stop. The cars are off the chain. The acting is great. The script is brilliant and the twists and turns will blow your mind.

Two years has passed and Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) is heading off to college. His guardian and friend, Bumblebee (Chevy Camaro) wants to go with him, but Sam isn't allowed to have a car at college. But as Sam is about to leave for college, he discovers a piece of The Cube, which was destroyed in the first film, attached to his sweatshirt. As he picks it up, ancient writings from Cybertron are inscribed into his mind. He begins seeing the symbols everywhere he goes, which lead him into the devastation and action that is Transformers 2: Revenge Of The Fallen.

Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Kevin Dunn, John Turturro, Hugo Weaving, Peter Cullen and Michael Bay are all back for by far the biggest film of the year. Joining them is Rainn Wilson, Isabel Lucas, Ramon Rodriguez and John Benjamin Hickey.

This film boasts some of the biggest and most intense action sequences in movie history. It now holds the record for the biggest explosion using live actors in the history of film making.

Lucky Michael Bay made this film. Over half a dozen cameras, five Helicopters (with camera mounts), dollys, tracks, jibs and handheld - all in slow motion.

Shia LaBeouf is the biggest thing to hit Hollywood since Harrison Ford. His emotional range is amazing and he clearly steals the show. His talents continue to amaze me with every film he does and without fail he delivers.

Megan Fox - Transformers 2
Megan Fox - Transformers 2

Megan Fox is as beautiful as ever. She has a much bigger role in this film and she definitely helps drive the movie from start to finish. Her character is now a big part of Sam's life and without her, this movie would have been lost.

Josh Duhamel is great as Major Lennox, leader of the NEST operations team. These guys work with the Autobots to help protect Earth from destruction by the Decepticons. Josh is a great character who ads a lot of action and comedy to the film.

Isabel Lucas - Transformers 2
Isabel Lucas - Transformers 2

There are a large number of new Transformers introduced in this epic, but there are still a lot more left to bring in. (Spoilers) Some of the new Transformers are The Fallen, Jolt, Skids, Mudflap, Jetfire, Arcee and The Devastator. Back are Optimus, Bumblebee, Ratchet, Ironhide, Barricade, Starscream, Shockwave and Megatron, plus many more.
This film will blow your mind and everything around you. It is probably the most fun, exciting action packed movie of 2009, and I can't wait until they do it again. Worth $16.50.

JK Thoughts:

Worth $12-

I enjoyed the movie but found the first one way better. I also apologise as I have included spoilers in my comments as I can't properly review the film without mentioning why I did not like this one as much. This film will appeal to fanboys but the rest of us are probably going to be annoyed wih it.

Bumble Bee
Bumble Bee

Firstly, the film starts with Bumblebee having lost his voice again and in my opinion solely for the reason that they want to do cool things with his radio again - already seen that! Then, how did they manage to make a Terminator 3 like waif robot?? How??

I also do not like the fact that endless more Decpticons make their way to the planet yet why are there only a few Autobots. Also, why are Decepticons serious and mature and the majority of Autobots rip offs of the annoying Jar Jar Binks from Star Wars Infame? There are three idiotbots in this film that drove me crazy. I don't understand why - is it to appeal to under 10yr olds?

Shia and Megan - Transformers 2
Shia and Megan - Transformers 2

Then there is the relationship between Shia Lebouf - who is probably one of my favourite actors of late. He is yet again brilliant in this film. I mean brilliant - the film would fall apart without him but him having a relationship with Megan Fox - it looks so incredibly wrong - it would be like our old PM John Howard dating Elle Macpherson. Wrong!

Megan Fox starts out in the film looking like a cheap garage calendar whore sitting ontop of a motorbike - it made me squirm - I mean she is beautiful and Sean was sitting next to me basically ejaculating at the site of her - but I think they made her look cheap and nasty. Later in the film she wears more clothes and I think I fell in love with her then - she looked beautiful without being slutted up. She is great in the film but the sexualisation of her was unneccesary.

OK - I had heard of the biggest explosion of all time on film but to me it was a let down - it was all over the place - but you can see one scene when Shia and Megan are running while explosions are going off everywhere and you can see real fear on both the actors faces - it worked well.

Ramon Rodriguez plays Sam's room mate from college who joins them for this ride - but he is completely unneccesary - he brings nothing to the film at all except a lengthening of the film that needed to be shorter by about half an hour.

The biggest thing that annoyed me with this one - the over over over CGI. I mean this film cannot be possible without CGI and in most cases it is used brilliantly but in the battle scenes that move so quick the CGI is so overused you cannot actually distinguish what you are looking at - everything just blurs onscreen - this needed more work, much more work. The car transformations are excetpional and still excite me.

Transformers2 Revenge of the Fallen

Most of the new transformers are great - all the Decpticon ones are awesome but the Autobot ones really need some mental work. I would seriously change to the Decepticons if I had to be stuck with half the idiot Autobots But I still love to death Bumble Bee - he makes the movie for me.

And one big spoiler you may wish to avoid reading:

What the hell is Transformer heaven - are you kidding me????????

OK - I think I have ripped into this way too much. Don't get me wrong - I enjoyed it but never felt that emotional rush I got and still get from the first one. I will buy it on Blu Ray when it comes out so I can watch the double feature at home but I think this film has let the franchise down compared to the first one. Micheal Bay has tried to squeeze in way too much to up the ante from the first one - and he has succeeded but at the cost of the soul of the film. He has said he will probably leave the franchise now after all the negative press the film is receiving world wide.

The combination of Sean's and my scores leaves you with the score of $14.25 - out Wednesday 24th June.

Jason... Sorry buddy but I like Seans review better only because I am a Michael Bay fanboy but I think you are looking into it too much mate, afterall it is a film that originated from toys and cartoons so they can pretty much do whatever they want with it. I understand where you are coming from but it sounds like you were looking for all the flaws as oppose to looking at it as escapism as what these films are all about. Maybe you will see it a bit differently a second time round.

On another note that keeps getting me as I see the trailer in the projection room is when Megan Fox covers her mouth in the trailer I noticed a ring on her wedding finger... Looks like Sam proposes to her?

Anyway I have been dying to see this for months and can't wait for our prints to come in on Monday night so I can test screen it. I might be back with another response. Stay well buddy and nice review boys.

I forgot to mention in my previous post Mr. King regarding the statement on Michael Bay possibly leaving the franchise, I did some digging and found this comment posted by him on his website/forums,

Hah,

Love press how they spin. Never said it - just wanted a vacation is more to the point. And no I don't read the good or the bad reviews.

Click on the link below to check out the thread, his post is just after half way.

Like I said to you before on FB I would love to see him come back and do a Bad Boys III before another Transformers film. If they keep popping out Transformers films every 2 years the general public will get sick of them very quickly, but I won't lol. I say bring on BBIII and then hit hard with a 3rd Transformers as I presume this one is left wide open for another.

OK - Tommy boy,
I remember when a friend of yours and myself commented how Str Trek was best film of the year - and you replied with "of course you guys think that - you are both die hard Trekkies" - well you are the die hard Bay fan and won't see anything bad about it. But you will be living in denial It is packed with error after error and sloppy script and direction. Sorry buddy. I appreciate you liking Sean's review better because you are that die hard fanboy - and thank god for them or the film wouldn't make money. Although I think this will make the highest gross for the year (until Avatar) I don't think it deserves it like Dark Knight did last year.

It's fine if it originated from Toys - does not matter where it came from - it has to deliver and I don't believe it does. I didn't enter the movie hunting down negative things - believe it or not I love films and live to watch them and be blown away - but you know this - we have both been doing it since I met you. Probably half the reason we are friends is due to our passion of film. But like I was saying - I don't look for errors, negative things or reasons to dislike - I just point them out when they constantly hit me in the face during the screening.

I hope I do feel differently second time around but I don't think it will happen. Don't get me wrong - I liked this film - just nowhere near as much as the first one.

To be honest - I think he will leave the franchise - and in a interview in Time magazine (or similar) a few months ago he did say he was considering leaving the franchise as he believes he has spent too much of his life with robots.

Don't care either way on BBIII.

Bring on Harry Potter is all I will say

In this case, I have to agree with your opinions, Jason. Maybe I have too much expectation on the second series, as I personally thought it was somehow a little bit 'rough', if it compared with the first episode (You know what I meant here, buddy)!

Yeah - it was all over the place Wilson - I still enjoyed it for the action but it was too much for me. To me the first one is perfect and a classic action sci fi film. Thanks for your comment. Take care!
