Welcome to Salty Popcorn - my site dedicated to expressing my opinion on films. Most of the reviews I read in the paper make me angry that they are either all so negative or I completely disagree with them. So now it's my turn. I hope you enjoy it and if you do sign up for updates on the left hand side. Thanks for stopping in!! PLEASE NOTE: My scoring of films is now based on an "Out of 10" score. Wanted ($8.50)

B Grade schlop that could have gone straight to DVD. Not even the glamourgoddess Jolie, the ever encapsulating Freeman or the increasingly talented and very sexy McAvoy can save this Titanic film. All big and over the top but going to sink to the bottom.

I actually got worked up with annoyance watching this one. The trailer (as always looked superb) and I was stinging to see what the director Timur Bekmambetov would do with this film. Bekmambetov became well known for bringing to the screen the Matrixesque styled Russian fantasy film Nochnoy dozor or in English Night Watch, he then tried again with a bigger budget to make its sequel Dnevnoy dozor or Day Watch and is in production on the conclusion to the trilogy Twilight Watch. The American film royalty saw them and thought CRAP, imagine what he can do with our money and here we have the rushed film. This film is basically 4 or 5 great action sequences strung together with weak assed chewing gum and not much more. I mean, the action sequences are superb, some of them truly amazing things you haven't seen on screen before but the bits in between are all SO crap it ruins the rest.

Jolie is sultry and stunning as normal and most guys may have to hide erections in the cinemas just watching her, truly amazing beauty that even this gay writer would turn straight for. Mix this with her butch action styled female fighting machine and to most men she is the perfect goddess. Lucky Brad. Then you have Morgan Freeman who is boring and playing a carbon copied character he has done in about 200 other films. James McAvoy is looking buff and plays the character well but O M G, what the hell is with the ludicrous American/ Generic film accent. Part of McAvoy's charm is his accent and there was nothing in the story that could have stopped him being from Scotland, for the first 15min's I cringed every time he spoke.

Then let us discuss the plot. Firstly - the synopsis:
"Wanted" tells the tale of one apathetic nobody's transformation into an unparalleled enforcer of justice. In 2008, we're introduced to a hero for a new generation: 25 year old employed slacker, WESLEY GIBSON. Wes is the most disaffected, cube-dwelling, clock-punching drone this planet has ever known. His boss chews him out hourly, his girlfriend ignores him routinely, and his life plods on in interminable boredom and routine. Everyone knows this disengaged slacker will amount to absolutely nothing, and so does he, until he meets the sexy, foxy woman named FOX, and then everything changes. Wes' estranged father is murdered, and the deadly Fox recruits him into The Fraternity, a secret society that trains him to avenge his father's death, by unlocking his dormant powers. And oh boy does he have powers, as she teaches Wes how to develop his lightning-quick reflexes and phenomenal agility, he discovers that The Fraternity lives by an ancient, unbreakable code: to carry out the death orders given by emotionless Fate itself. Wes, with his wickedly brilliant and sexy tutor, plus the paternal guidance of The Fraternity's enigmatic leader, SLOAN, young Wes grows to enjoy all the strength and success he ever wanted. But, slowly, he realizes there's more to his dangerous associates than meets the casual eye. And, as he wavers between new found heroism and vengeance, Wes will come to learn what no one can ever teach him; that he alone controls his destiny. Written by Orange

The secret society known as the Fraternity was originated by the rug makers of ancient times, the weavers!!! Apparently they found a secret language in the way a piece of cloth is weaved. If the thread is on top its a zero and if it weaves under it's a 1 - this makes the binary language that tells them who must die! OK - so to find out who should be assassinated they consult the, wait for it.........Loom of Fate. I was in hysterics as to why they would think this would be good in a film!!! OK - if it's in the graphic novel, leave it there!!

I will say that the action sequences that work are marvelous and I would LOVE to see Bekmambetov let loose on a film with an amazing plot and budget. Very gritty Matrix styled and gravity defying stuff. I wish this had worked well. Worth $8.50 and playing now.

Dang. I really WANTED this to be fantastic. Am very annoyed McAvoy doesn't have his Scottishness in place. His accent sets him apart and adds to his allure. But then maybe he didn't want to end up like Sean Connery - Scottish even if he were to play full-fledged Frenchman.

Me too Michaelie and it could have been fantastic with a plot tweaking!!
Maybe it was just too weird for me to hear him not speaking a Scottish accent but it so suits him and when he screams in this movie he is like a teenage girl.

I don't think you've spoken negatively about another film recently! Really? That bad?

From the moment I saw the trailer I cringed at this. Angelina Jolie just seems to play the same character over and over again. Why do they have to make every character American, I mean what is wrong with the fact that their are other languages and accents in the world?

I'm so disappointed that Morgan Freeman is in this

LOL - yeah sorry Amy. I got a bit carried away but yes the film annoyed me. I have written lots of positive things lately because I have liked so many of the films. Last bad review about 2 weeks ago where I gave a film "Sleuth" $6.50. I think I disliked it because I wanted what the trailer provided - great action and something more than the film delivered. Thanks for commenting!

I totally agree Cheryl, she has played this role so many times before but she does do it well and you could call her the mature person's eye candy. Haha. I think the film could do well with a male audience just wanting to perve. The accent thing was annoying and more so that in American films they don't use American accents - they use a standardised Hollywood non differential US dialect. They're just weird! LOL

Hmm... I wasn't sure about watching this one... The ad looked really cool and reminded me of the Matrix: Office worker meets a hot, arse-kicking woman then gets an invite from a cool, black guy to join them. I loved the Night/Day Watch movies and I'm disappointed to hear that this one has such an iffy story. Ah well.

Very entertaining post. Thanks.

Rusty.

maybe i should invest in a set of stills of McAvoy rather than watching the movie! haha

I found it to b ea fairly entertaining movie, the plot was compltely predictable but meh, I loved how that black dude, I forget his name throws in a couple of lines (the way he says 'shoot this mother fucker' is absoloutely hilarious). It's one of those movies where the trailer gives it all away leaving nothing much, but still, bending bullets and crazy car stunts are fine by me.

Jolie looks as ugly as ever but now comes with added wrinkles, not that I carea bout looks but she always has had the complexion of afish with poofy lips I've disliked.

LOL - thanks for the laugh Ahmed. The action sequences are good. The black dude - is some one named singer I think- can't think of his name either.

Morgan - not far from the truth. Sprinkle with a bot of Matrix and your on the money.

Rusty - it does have a feeling of the Night/Day Watch movies but misses on most levels.

Thanks for the comments guys and gals!! Have a great weekend!

Oh - you're talking about Morgan Freeman.
I looked it up - the other assassin guys is "Common" - that's his name! He is some 80's and 90's rapper who is now more in film.
