Welcome to Salty Popcorn - my site dedicated to expressing my opinion on films. Most of the reviews I read in the paper make me angry that they are either all so negative or I completely disagree with them. So now it's my turn. I hope you enjoy it and if you do sign up for updates on the left hand side. Thanks for stopping in!! Also, be sure to check out my other blogs www.sydneytable.com and http://www.orble.com/total-randomness/ PLEASE NOTE: My scoring of films is now based on an "Out of 10" score. The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed. Carl Jung (1875 - 1961)

WEEKEND: A Review

January 24th 2012 07:08
: Boring Gay Film
Category: Reviews
On a Friday night after a drunken house party with his straight mates, Russell heads out to a gay club, alone and on the pull. Just before closing time he picks up Glen but what's expected to be just a one-night stand becomes something else, something special. That weekend, in bars and in bedrooms, getting drunk and taking drugs, telling stories and having sex, the two men get to know each other. It is a brief encounter that will resonate throughout their lives. The Weekender is both an honest and unapologetic love story between two guys and a film about the universal struggle for an authentic life in all its forms. It is about the search for identity and the importance of making a passionate commitment to your life.

Gay film, weekend, Tom Cullen, Chris New

This gay film makes me feel like a traitor - it is winning awards and hype all over the planet and I have been keen to see a gay film for so long as I am in need of seeing my kin get it on and am over watching so many straight actors kissing and getting it on But I thought this was beyond boring - it was valium on film.

If I wanna go out, take drugs and chat with a guy for a few days while constantly hooking up for sex and taking more drugs then this is what I would experience - I failed to see any fiction in the film - I was just watching two guys have a great weekend. If you think this is awesome and you want to shower it in awards then that's awesome but I am terribly sorry, it did nothing for me.

The acting is fine for peeps you won't know and the chemistry is good. I actually think I am Russell in real life. More straight than gay and shy in the meeting of other gay men - ok - I am not that much like Russell - he gets horny and goes to a gay bar looking for sex. He acquires it in about 10mins - and then the film starts with him carrying on a weekend relationship with this guy. Jealous I am not getting this kind of love - definitely .

The film meanders and is much slower towards the start with a quickening of pace after half way but by this stage I wanted to turn the film off. This is only my opinion so if you are a queen out there that would go to war to defend the rights of anything remotely gay then I apologise but this ain't for me. If it is winning awards then perhaps I wasn't in the right frame of mind for this one and you should make your own mind up. It is out this Thursday on limited release and probably only at art house cinemas in the Oxford St area. Worth 4 out of 10.

I know I know - I will need to hand in my gay licence for violation of negativity towards gay!!
