Where the Wild Things Are ($14-)
Innovative director Spike Jonze collaborates with celebrated author Maurice Sendak to bring one of the most beloved books of all time to the big screen in "Where the Wild Things Are", a classic story about childhood and the places we go to figure out the world we live in. The film tells the story of Max, a rambunctious and sensitive boy who feels misunderstood at home and escapes to where the Wild Things are. Max lands on an island where he meets mysterious and strange creatures whose emotions are as wild and unpredictable as their actions. The Wild Things desperately long for a leader to guide them, just as Max longs for a kingdom to rule. When Max is crowned king, he promises to create a place where everyone will be happy. Max soon finds, though, that ruling his kingdom is not so easy and his relationships there prove to be more complicated than he originally thought.
I first heard about this film about 18 months ago. When we heard it was being made at work Sam tells me it was one of the best books he ever read as a kid. He then asked me what I wanted for Xmas that year and I asked him to get me the book. He mentioned it was a definite "kids" book and I may not appreciate it now. I asked for it anyways. He ordered it but being the slack ass he is it is probably still sitting in the book store in Killara awaiting collection and I am still waiting on a Xmas present from that year bad boy!! But I did manage to read it in 5min while waiting for a coffee in Borders (side note: this is the ONLY way to appreciate books at Borders as they charge basically $5- more per book than any other book store). I enjoyed it and loved the monsters and did realise that as a child I would have loved this book because it got the imagination juices flowing.
But this film is definately NOT a kids film. It is a children's film for adults. A film where you can look back on what you enjoyed in the book and see the depth to it and the clever emotional explanations of all our desires and emotions. It is VERY dark and depressing and one of the let downs for me is that there are limited happy moments. When I see kids on film I want to see them being kids and having huge amounts of fun. I get sad when I see them battling and being put through things that they should not have to deal with. My neighbour reminds me of the sounds of unhindered child laughter, that belly laugh that is out of control - she says you could sit there all day and listen to nothing else and get pure enjoyment out of it. I agree - let's bottle that stuff. Let's strap a bottle to Finn, tie him down and tickle him non stop
This film is so dark and depressing that insensitive parents and the A.D.D. society could pretty much use this film as reasoning that all kids should be on Rydaline. But to the appreciative parent and film enthusiast this film is one of the most clever films ever made. Each of the monsters represents an emotion from Max's world. There is his desire to have nothing but fun, his desire to trash things, his depressing emotions and his desire ot be king. All of these are emulated in the different monsters. Max is a child who wants to remain the centre of attention that most children are. He also wants to run amuck and he wants his family to drop everything for him. When he does not get this he lashes out and runs away making it all the way to a magic land where all his inner turmoils are lifelike creatures from his imagination. On the surface if you met Max you would think spoilt little brat but when you look under the surface you can see there are reasons and actions to Max's every thought. This is the magic of this film.
Max is played by Max Records who is my actor of the year. He is bloody sensational and I honestly fell in love with him. I have a huge desire to have a child of my own but being a gay man the possibilities of this are minute. If I was to have a kid Max is the one I want - in fact I want to buy him
And I want him going crazy in that costume in the backyard nonstop. I have never seen a kid throw their all in for a part and pull it off so succesfully. Max was chosen from months of auditions from several countries from thousands of auditions and Spike Jonze succeeded in picking the best. Without a good Max this would have been B grade fodder.
The dramas associated with this film coming to the screen should nearly be a movie itself. First of all a director was nearly not found, Sendak had been searching for years. Then this film began filming in 2005 and many thought Jonze's oddness would be the end of the film and it would never see a screen. Originally, the film had a May 2008 release, which was pushed back to October 2008, after that, it was pushed back to a 2009 release and people again speculated it would not see the screen. It could not be decided if the film would be an animation or a feature live action film. The film was originally set for release from Universal, but disagreements with Spike Jonze led to him taking the film to Warner Bros. Warner Brothers studio was so unhappy with Spike Jonze's final movie (it was much less family friendly than they imagined) that they wanted to re-shoot the whole $75 milion project in early 2008. Jonze was eventually given some more time and money by the studio in order to make the final product satisfying to both, the studio and himself. And all I will say is THANKGOD - it is a brilliant piece of film and a visual spectacular worthy of awards.
The score of the film is another superb character of the movie and was written by Jonze's girlfriend during shooting. They have since gone their seperate ways but Karen O, the lead singer of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, captures the film brilliantly through music.
The charatcers in this film are just astounding and the costumes are out of this world. The actors are in suits but the faces are CGI - and you cannot notice - they look so real. Actors were only every in costumes for a maximum of 30min before being allowed a break out of costume in front of airconditioning but the poor stunt doubles were in the costumes for periods of 8hrs or more. Ewww - bags not getting into that costume after a stuntman. Sonny Gerasimowicz, who designed the Wild Things costumes, wound up being the suit performer for Alexander the Goat Boy. And I pity him as he gets thrown all over the place.
I wanted to score this film perfectly but had been so excited for a super fun adventure for so long I was actually a bit disappointed when I found out it was so serious and dark. VIsually perfect and a great psychological drama that is clever beyond its years. Watch a young boy grow up in 2hrs. Yay Max and double Yay Spike Jonze. Out now and worth $14-.
