Zack & Miri Make a Porno ($10-) R
Lifelong friends and roommates Zack and Miri are facing hard times and a mountain of debt. When the electricity and plumbing get cut off, they seize upon the idea of making a homegrown porno movie for some quick cash, enlisting the help of their friends. The two vow that having sex will not ruin their friendship. But as filming begins, what started out as a business proposition between friends turns into something much more.
Note about the above poster: This poster was deemed too explicit by the MPAA and was banned in the US, because it suggested the characters on the posters are engaging in oral sex. It featured two separate images of Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks, who are fully clothed, and the back of the actors' heads close to each other's crotch. Would this be conservative much? It has not been banned anywhere else at time of writing. To make up for the banned poster Kevin Smith drew a doodle poster to stick it to the man (as seen below). This poster is the poster used throughout the USA.
The first hour of this film was close to the funniest, overly vulgar thing I have ever seen on film. Elizabeth Banks is amazing as usual and her ability to go from drama to comedy in a wide range of films is superb. Seth Rogan is playing Seth Rogan as usual and I can't see him doing anything else so pretty soon I can see the viewing public becoming quite bored with his idiot ugly guy who can pull hot chicks while making jokes.
The film made many mistakes and I hope Kevin Smith realises them to improve for his future films. Zack & Miri come up with the decision to make the porno after visiting their high school reunion. At the reunion Miri decides to try her luck again with the school jock, played by Superman himself Brandon Routh, while at the bar Zack is having a drink with Superspunk Mac guy Justin Long, it is discovered that Long is actually a gay porno star and unbeknownst to Miri is Superman's gay lover. The scene is hysterical and this was Smith's first mistake with the film. Justin Long is the funniest person in the film and yet he is only in it for approximately 5minutes. For the rest of the film I kept thinking they needed him - surely they could have brought him in as the porno's director.
The second big mistake is that about halfway through the film something happens (spoiler so won't mention it) but from that point forward except for about 5min the rest if the film turns into a Romantic Drama that Drew Barrymore should have cameoed in. It completely ruined the entire first half's humor for me. I went from laughing my head off to sitting there saying "are u kidding". This is what gave this film a low score. If they had kept the humor through the whole film except as comic relief to humorless romantic drama then I would have scored the film way high.
The cast of the film is great, I am not a big Seth Rogan fan, but Elizabeth Banks, superb, Jason Mewes was amazing, so much better than his onscreen film partnership with Kevin Sith as Jay from Jay and Silent Bob and he looks amazing with short hair - in fact I would venture to say he is HOT! And an amazing comedic silly actor. Justin Long was by far my favourite and he should do more comedy. Brandon Routh is gorgeous but had a very small part while being overshadowed by gay lover Justin Long. Craig Robinson as Delaney is so dry and funny he had me nearly wetting myself - I love his kind of humor. The rest of the cast was well casted, even throwing in real life porn star Traci Lords.
The hype behind this film is very strong - but that's all it is and I think the hype has been created by a poster being banned and the fact it has porno in the title. It has some great comedy in it - but so do most comedies and I can't see Seth Rogan being around for much longer. Suggestion: Try something else Seth.
Trivia (care of IMDB):
1) According to ‘Entertainment Weekly’, The Weinstein Company greenlit the project based solely on the title.
2) The role of Miri was originally written for Rosario Dawson. However, due to prior commitments with the Steven Spielberg produced Eagle Eye (2008), she had to decline.
3) Writer/Director Kevin Smith wrote the role of Zack with Seth Rogen in mind. In fact, Smith has stated that if Rogen turned down the role, the film would not have been made.
4) Lester has a slight lisp because Jason Mewes was having dental surgery during production.
5) The film was edited twice, and rated NC-17 both times. The final cut was initially rated NC-17, but got an R on appeal.
6) In one sex scene Lester (Jason Mewes) flips his tie around, so it's hanging down his back. This was done because Jason has director Kevin Smith's daughter's name tattooed down his back, and used the tie to hide said tattoo.
7) The city of Philadelphia refused to allow the poster at bus stops because of the word "porno". When Smith agreed to have the word taken out and just have the title "Zack & Miri" the city still refused.
8) The City Of Toronto has slightly edited version of the original poster at most subway stations. Elizabeth Banks is smiling, and the alternate lowered version of her in front of Seth Rogen shows her forehead, implying she is not performing oral intercourse.
9) Several cinemas in the U.S. refused to screen the movie, because of thinking that the film's content of graphic nudity and sex was very close to a NC-17 rating.
10) Some television commercials dropped the words "Make A Porno" from the voiceover and removed the words from the title card.
11) In this movie Bobby Long is played by someone named Brandon (Brandon Routh) and Brandon is played by someone named Long (Justin Long).
The film could have been HUGE and I think it will go great with teenagers plus Seth Rogan and Kevin Smith fans. Watch the film for Justin Long at the start and the porno auditions. Worth $10- Out Feb 19th
